Flipped Classroom Training Program

Abstract

A design blueprint for a comprehensive course on flipped instruction was created using instructional design principles.  The Flipped Classroom Training Program (FCTP) is a course designed to teach upper elementary educators at Viewpoint School how to “flip” lessons from their curriculum, culminating in learner created video lessons from curricular units of their choosing.  This process began with a needs assessment, which discovered a learning discrepancy between Viewpoint School administrators’ desire to implement flipped classroom instruction in its upper elementary school and upper elementary teachers’ knowledge of flipped classroom instruction.  Then the learning environment and learners were analyzed, including information about their prior knowledge and motivation.  A task analysis was also conducted to decompose the course and one selected lesson into their learning outcomes and major tasks. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) was interviewed to break down the action and decision steps required by the lesson’s key task.  This process informed the lesson’s learning objectives, assessment plan, and generative and supplantive learning activities. Fittingly, the FCTP utilizes flipped classroom instruction, where learners view a video lesson on learning content prior to attending a live session to engage in meaningful activities. Learners will take weekly quizzes on pre-live session content and be summatively assessed on their submitted video lesson via analytic performance rubric.  Learners who successfully complete the FCTP will be able to (a) explain the concept and benefits of flipped classroom instruction, (b) create engaging video lessons from their curriculum, and (c) create classroom activities based on flipped video lesson content.
